Summer Crowds and the Rise of Overtourism

Europe is breathtaking in the summer, but anyone walking the streets of Amsterdam, Paris, or Rome in July and August today will notice that the limits of hospitality seem to have been reached. In recent years, the term overtourism has become a permanent fixture in the news, and for good reason.

Why is it getting so crowded?

Since the 1990s, global tourism has exploded. What was once a luxury has become accessible to millions due to the rise of budget airlines and a growing middle class worldwide. Additionally, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have had a massive impact: specific spots go “viral,” pushing everyone to flock to the exact same photo point at the exact same time.

The Summer Peak

During the summer months, this congestion reaches a breaking point. Cities built for hundreds of thousands of residents must suddenly accommodate millions of visitors simultaneously. This has significant consequences:

  • Wait Times: At icons like the Louvre or the Colosseum, queues of three to four hours are no longer an exception.
  • Pressure on Locals: In neighborhoods like the Jordaan or the Barri Gòtic, local shops are often displaced by souvenir stands and waffle houses, while rent prices soar due to the popularity of short-term rentals.
  • Atmosphere: The authentic soul of a city can get lost when the sound of rolling suitcases on the pavement drowns out the local language.

Travel Smart, Travel Like a Local

Overtourism doesn’t mean you should avoid these cities altogether, but it does mean you should visit them differently. By bypassing the major “tourist traps” and choosing the neighborhoods where the residents actually live, you help relieve the pressure on the historic centers. Moreover, you get a much richer, quieter, and more genuine experience in return.

This guide is designed to help you distinguish the “photo ops” from the places where you can still feel the true heartbeat of the city.
